Hong Kong Future Talents Scholarship Scheme for Advanced Studies

Background

HKU Master of Public Health programme has been selected by the University Grants Council (UGC) to be part of the "Hong Kong Future Talents Scholarship Scheme for Advanced Studies (FTSS)" in recognition to the School’s strategic contribution to capacity building in Hong Kong. The Scheme seeks to award incoming local students in 2025 that demonstrate strong track records and potential to contribute to the priority areas conducive to Hong Kong’s development.

Eligibility*

  • Local* students who are admitted (accepted the admission offer with deposit paid) to the MPH programme (full/part-time mode) by 30 June 2025.

  • To avoid double benefit, students awarded with other government scholarships including the Continuing Education Fund (except student financial assistance in the form of loans from the Government) for pursuing the MPH are not eligible to apply.

Application procedures and deadlines

  • Candidates who wish to apply for the Scheme should submit an application for admission to the MPH programme and upload scanned copies of the required supporting documents to HKU’s Taught Postgraduate Online Application System by 30 June 2025.

  • Admission application will be reviewed by the MPH Selection Committee, the Medical Faculty and the University Registry. 

  • Upon receipt of the admission offer, candidates who wish to apply for the Scheme should submit a separate application for the Scheme by 15 July 2025. Application details will be sent to successful candidates along with the offer letter.

Award

11 successful candidates will each receive an award of HK$100,000. This award shall be used to offset the tuition fee of HK$220,200*, with the remaining HK$120,200 to be covered by the student.

Criteria

Merit-based, taking into account the students' academic achievements, professional qualifications, relevant working experience, achievements in other areas, and a proposal submitted by the student on how they will contribute to the priority area (i.e. promoting healthy living and caring community) of Hong Kong or the Greater Bay Area (GBA) after completing the MPH programme. 

 

All awardees must sign a written undertaking to contribute to relevant industries or sectors in Hong Kong or GBA through full-time employment or entrepreneurial activities after graduation. Awardees will be required to submit a mandatory return no later than 12 months after the end of his/her last semester of studies under the relevant programme, with (i) (for full-time employment) specific information on at least the name of employer, position held, job nature and salary level of the scholarship awardee or (for entrepreneurial activities) company name with business registration number, description of business nature and details of entrepreneurial activities conducted, as well as (ii) a one-page summary of the awardee's contributions to Hong Kong after graduation and its relevance to the programme pursued.

Important Notes

  • Scholarship awardees who are 1. unable to complete the programme or 2. fail to attain an expected level of performance or 3. fail to complete the mandatory return in time or 4. the provision of untrue information therein shall be required to refund the University the full amount of the Scholarship received.

* Non-local students holding (a) student visa / entry permit; (b) visa / entry permit under the Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates; or (c) dependent visa / entry permit who were 18 years old or above when they were issued with such visa / entry permit by the Director of Immigration are NOT eligible for the Scheme.
