I had my practicum under supervision of two Senior Managers in the Department of Strategy and Service Planning in Hospital Authority Head Office. During my practicum, I was involved in two main projects: The Strategic Service Framework for Cancer Services and the Planning Standards of Day Chemotherapy Centre. For the first project, I cooperated with my colleagues to compile data files for each cluster in the HA and helped taking notes during hospital visits. For the latter, I independently conducted a literature review and a situational analysis and presented my findings in the monthly Department Meeting. It was definitely rewarding to see how my efforts would contribute to HA’s future strategic direction.

I chose to have my practicum in the HAHO because I thought this would be relevant to my future work as a clinician. Indeed, this opportunity allowed me to see things from a broader perspective with consideration for different stakeholders. The issue analysis framework I learnt from my practicum site would also be useful in my MPH studies and my future career in public health.

I would highly recommend this site for future practicum students. As long as you are proactive, willing to reach out to colleagues for opportunities to contribute, and connect with your site supervisor often, it will be a very rewarding experience.
