The Professional Development Hub is a versatile platform that regularly organises enlightening events known as Coffee and Career talks. These events serve as a medium for interactive discussions between students, staff, graduates, and members of the general public. On the 10th of October, 2024, one such event was held where Professor Vivian Lin graced the occasion.   Professor Lin is a renowned figure in the field of public and global health. During the event, she actively engaged in a dynamic dialogue with the attendees, which comprised a diverse audience. The audience was not only physically present but also included individuals who joined the discussion online. The event saw the participation of over 25 people, thus demonstrating its far-reaching impact. The focal point of the discussion was Professor Lin's personal career journey in the field of public and global health. She shared invaluable insights from her extensive experience garnered from working in diverse regions across the globe. Her narrative was a rich tapestry of knowledge, providing a unique perspective to the attendees and leaving them inspired. The event culminated in an intense Q&A session, which was moderated by Dr. Polly Wong. This session was a stimulating exchange of ideas and insights, which left the participants with a lot to ponder upon. It was a rewarding experience for the attendees, who gained substantial knowledge and inspiration from the event. The event was not just a discussion, but a journey into the realm of public and global health, guided by Professor Lin.

Hello, My name is Jerome, currently a part time Year 1 MPH student in the concentration of Principle Health Practice (PHP). Apart from being a student, I worked as a full-time research assistant here at School of Public Health HKU helping surveillance research projects of influenza and COVID-19.   After several years of frontline support in various research projects, I recognized it’s time for me to have one-step forward to strengthen my public health knowledge through a structured academic training. In addition to the 3-years battles in the COVID-19 pandemic with my research team, this valuable experience ignited my passion for pursuing my studies in MPH programme in HKU. I hope I can deepen my theoretical background and be able to utilize professional knowledge to help with disease prevention and increasing the public's awareness on infectious disease through health promotion.   I am very honored and thankful to be granted the UGC Targeted TPg Fellowships. This motivates me to have high-quality study and learn comprehensively from outstanding professors and experts in different aspects of courses. The Fellowships also allow me to have a great opportunity to collaborate and interact with excellent classmates from different disciplinary and backgrounds.    The learning experience in MPH programme is sometimes challenging but there are more fruitful moments I have cherished. The MPH curriculum allows me to have a broad understanding in different healthcare settings, policy management, person-to-person communication and the tactics to address public health issues in the real situation. The extensive knowledge is not only text-book theories but very useful to apply in daily life and research works.    MPH has significantly broadened my knowledge and insight of the field. Reflecting the learning process I have gone through, the multi-faceted training in MPH has well-equipped me to contribute more in community primary prevention and promotion that is fundamental and vital elements for community health. In the future, I hope I can transfer my knowledge efficiently to the public and raise people's awareness on hygiene and health behaviors through research projects and campaigns.

Hi, I am Esther. I obtained my bachelor degree of Nursing from HKU in 2019. Since then, I have been a Registered Nurse in a public hospital.   Learning is a lifelong process, especially in the constantly evolving healthcare industry. Thus, after obtaining my postgraduate diploma of midwifery, I decided to further my studies by taking the MPH. As a nurse and a midwife, I have many chances to engage with the public and promote health, especially women’s health. As stated by Dr PY LAM, the Director of Health of Hong Kong (HKSAR Department of Health, 2018), “Health is not merely the absence of disease, but a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. It is a resource for everyday life.” I wanted to develop an insight to identify and evaluate health issues in Hong Kong to promote health.   I am honored to be the UGC Targeted TPg Programmes Fellowship recipient. It not only motivates me to work harder, but also gives me the confidence to move forward. It is because the fellowship gives recognition of my aspiration and achievement.   I am currently studying Epidemiology and biostatistics. Out of expectation, my role in workplace changed during my study. My exposure to scientific journals and research surged, I am so grateful that I study MPH just in time. In addition, having classmates with multi-cultural and diverse work backgrounds enables me to consider global healthcare system in multiple perspectives.   The design of MPH curriculum allows us to choose electives apart from concentration. One of my elective topics is related to ageism, a topic which I never look into or think deeply about. Although the journey is not easy, studying MPH provides me new knowledge essential to my career development and opportunities to think outside the box as well as widens my social circle.   Upon my graduation, I will be equipped with clinical and biostatistical knowledge. I hope to utilize the knowledge acquired to formulate strategies to improve health outcomes and promote healthy living and caring community in Hong Kong.

The School was honored to host a visit by our esteemed MPH External Examiner - Professor SV Subramanian in September 2024. Prof Subramanian is a Professor of Population Health and Geography at Harvard University, and Chair of the Faculty Advisory Group for the Center for Geographic Analysis at Harvard University. We are grateful for the valuable insights and feedback provided during the review process. Our students also had the privilege to meet Prof Subramanian in an exclusive sharing session. We thank Prof Subramanian for his generous sharing with our students. I am currently a part-time Year 1 MPH student concentrating on Health Economics, Policy, and Management. I am also a registered nurse with experience in the healthcare sector, having completed my Bachelor's degree in Nursing from HKU. My professional background has deeply influenced my interest in public health. I decided to pursue a Master of Public Health (MPH) to broaden my understanding of public health issues and acquire the skills necessary to address these challenges at a systemic level. Specifically, my interest lies in understanding the economic aspects of healthcare, crafting effective policies, and managing health services to enhance the efficiency and equity of healthcare delivery. Being granted the UGC Targeted TPg Fellowships was an incredible honor. It not only provided financial support, making it easier to focus on my studies, but also validated my commitment to public health. This fellowship has been a significant motivator, encouraging me to excel in my coursework and research. One of the aspects I have enjoyed most during my MPH study has been the interdisciplinary approach to learning. Engaging with peers from diverse professional backgrounds has enriched my perspective and has been invaluable in understanding the multifaceted nature of public health issues. Upon graduating from the MPH program, I aspire to work in public health policy development, focusing on areas such as health economics, policy-making, and management. I aim to leverage my clinical experience and newly acquired public health expertise to make a broader impact on healthcare systems and community health and well-being.

As a registered nurse and current first-year student in the MPH program at HKU, specializing in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, I bring a unique perspective to the field of public health. In my current role as a project leader with an NGO in Sai Kung, I oversee the implementation of mobile primary health services in rural areas. This position has provided invaluable insights into the challenges and opportunities in delivering healthcare to underserved populations. My decision to pursue an MPH was driven by a firm belief in universal health access and informed by my experiences in Sai Kung. The program's core values - effective learning through shared experiences, diversity and inclusiveness, and evidence-based approaches - align closely with my professional ethos and the realities I've encountered in Sai Kung. Receiving the UGC Targeted TPg Fellowship was a significant milestone. This recognition not only provides financial support but also serves as a powerful motivator in my HKUMPH journey. It has instilled a deeper sense of responsibility and commitment to excel in my coursework. The MPH program has been intellectually stimulating and professionally rewarding. The opportunity to engage with like-minded individuals who share a commitment to public health has been particularly enriching. Additionally, the expertise and support of the faculty have been instrumental in expanding my understanding of complex public health issues. Upon completion of the MPH, I aim to leverage my advanced knowledge and skills to develop and implement more comprehensive primary healthcare programs for rural areas. My long-term objective is to contribute to evidence-based policy-making that addresses healthcare disparities and promotes “Health for All” access to health services. This educational journey represents more than personal development; it's an investment in the capacity to effect meaningful change in community health. I look forward to applying these learnings to create tangible improvements in public health outcomes.
