Student Voice - Kung Shuk Kwan Jessica

Hi! I am Jessica, a registered Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, and I’m currently a student in the HKU Master of Public Health program.

My journey to public health was solidified during the pandemic, while I was caring for elderly COVID-19 patients in an isolation facility. Day after day, I saw how systemic issues like loneliness and a lack of integrated care could harm people just as much as a virus. I realized that while my TCM training allowed me to heal individuals, I wanted the tools to address the root causes of health problems affecting entire communities. That is why I chose to pursue an MPH.

Receiving the Hong Kong Future Talents Scholarship was both a wonderful surprise and a tremendous honour. To me, it felt like a powerful affirmation, not just of my personal goals, but of the critical importance of investing in public health for Hong Kong's future.

What I've enjoyed most so far at HKU is the incredible community. Professors, guest speakers and my classmates are doctors, social workers, researchers and professionals from all over the world. Every discussion is a chance to learn from their diverse expertise, and their passion for creating change is truly inspiring.

Upon graduating, I aspire to dedicate my career to public health, focusing on integrating preventative care and strengthening health systems for our aging population. I hope to bridge the wisdom of traditional medicine with modern public health strategies to build a system that values dignity and wellness for all.

To anyone considering this path, I highly encourage you to apply. Thank you!
